Social GPS and live traffic app Waze is getting a little smarter. It now offers real-time gas prices and fuel discounts in addition to driving directions and traffic information. If you’re not familiar with Waze, the service offers turn-by-turn directions and uses its collective user base to keep track of traffic and road conditions. When you have the app running during your commute to work, Waze is keeping track of how fast you’re traveling. That information is then reported back into the app and provided to other drivers to help influence their driving decisions. For instance, you could see that other Waze drivers were traveling 10 mph on a highway where they usually go 75.

If you run into congestion, you can take sharing a step further and report to other drivers what the issue is so they can decide to reroute their travels or stick it out in traffic with you. For instance, you can report an accident or hazard in the road. You can also share things like red light cameras or where police might be lurking to catch speeders.
With the new gas prices addition, you can search for fuel around you through a new category menu in the app and then see real-time prices near where you are. You can look at gas stations that are just near you, or you can also look at stations along your route so you don’t have to stray from your travel plans or backtrack.
The update also allows users to report gas prices they find so other people can take advantage of the deal as well.
In addition to helping you find gas, Waze will help you save some cash at the pump as well. The app is offering in-app discounts on gasoline through partnerships with Kum & Go, Hess, Mid-Atlantic Convenience Stores, (BP and Exxon stations) ConocoPhillips and Vintners Distributers (Shell) locations.
“Now 19 million strong, the Waze community is the largest group of drivers in the world - with that should come benefits as we harness our collective buying power,” said Di-Ann Eisnor, Waze VP of platform and partnerships.
To get the discount, you’ll have to go inside the gas station and show a code on your phone -- a PLU code that can be inputted into any gas station register to get a discount. It's not just tech-savvy stations sporting the latest technology. Eisnor says that decision allows Waze to offer gas discounts a wider number of places.
Waze’s gas prices will initially be available at 134 stations in California, with the service rolling out to the rest of the U.S. over the next two weeks.
The update to the existing app also adds some other additional features including the ability to add a stop along your route, search for businesses and points of interest by category.
